Gingerbread is the best gift from Toruń. In the past, they were sent as a gift to royal courts and served to the most distinguished guests coming to the city. Even Fryderyk Chopin was delighted with them when he visited Copernicus' town in 1825. "The greatest impression, or alias impression, was made by gingerbread on me," he wrote in a letter to his friend. These spicy, aromatic cookies have been baked in Toruń since the 16th century.
You can learn about the traditions of Toruń gingerbread at the Toruń Gingerbread Museum. The interior of the museum is located in the former 19th-century gingerbread factory belonging to the Weese family , which gave rise to today's "Kopernik" Confectionery Factory. Here you will see a unique collection of gingerbread molds from the 17th and 20th centuries and souvenirs from the former Toruń factories producing these spicy delicacies. You will learn about the ingredients of gingerbread dough, where they come from, what exotic gingerbread spices look like and what they smell like, and where the name of the most famous gingerbread in Toruń - "Katarzynki" - comes from. At the end, you will feel like an employee of a former factory and create traditional gingerbread with your own hands.
