Chełmno, situated on nine hills, is one of the most beautiful medieval cities in Poland. Walking through the historic streets, you will learn about the interesting history of the old town, located on the European Brick Gothic Trail.
The history of the city is related to the Teutonic Order, which in 1233 granted Chełmno a location right, the so-called The Chełmno Privilege, which is a model for locating over 225 Polish cities, including: Warsaw, Toruń or Gdańsk. Chełmno delights with its fully preserved checkerboard street layout and one of the longest rings of defensive walls in Europe, 2,270 m long. The Gothic-Renaissance town hall adorning the market square is enchanting with its architecture. On one of its walls you will notice the so-called Chełmno rod – a medieval measurement standard. Today, the town hall is the seat of the Chełmno Land Museum, where you will learn not only about the history of the city, but also about the world-famous surgeon Ludwik Rydygier, who in 1880 performed the world's first partial removal of the stomach with cancer.
The unique panorama of the city is outlined by the towers of six Gothic churches. One of them is the parish church of St. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where the relic of St. Valentine has been kept for centuries. Thanks to this and the annual Chełmno Valentine's Day celebrated in the city, Chełmno is called the "city of lovers".
Perspektywy – 9 Hills Festival is an event thanks to which you will see Chełmno in a unique way, learn its secrets and unusual nooks and crannies. The name of the festival refers to the nine hills that were assigned the protection of the nine ancient muses of Apollo. Their creative spirit penetrates the city walls and turns it into a city of art for three days.
When visiting the Park of Miniatures of Teutonic Castles, you will take a look at the fortified fortresses that were built centuries ago in the historic Chełmno land by monastic knights.
