Sanctuary in Zamarte

Places
Zamarte brings pilgrims to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Scapular. The origins of this Marian sanctuary are linked to the Teutonic Knights commandant Jost von Hohenkirchen, who after the Battle of Grunwald founded a chapel here for the miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary. In 1747 Bernardines were brought to Zamarte. The founder of the monastery was Jan Michał Grabowski, the owner of these lands. The modest, ascetic form of the church conceals an unusually rich and ornamented interior, all of which dates back to the times of the foundation in the second half of the 18th century. The frescos, created by a Bernardine friar, Brother Paschalis Volos, are true works of art. In the main altar, decorated with the coats of arms of the founders and an 18th-century replica of the painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa, it is worth paying attention to a small statue of the Virgin Mary in a silver dress, standing on the tabernacle. This is the miracle-working representation for which the chapel in Zamarte was founded in the 15th century. In the crypt under the church lies the body of the founder of the monastery.
