Chata menonicka w Chrystkowie

Places
Looking for traces of the Hollanders who once drained and developed the Lower Vistula Valley, it is worth visiting Chrystkowo. There is a historical cottage from the end of the 18th century. It is one of the most valuable and last Hollander sites in the region. It is an example of architecture perfectly adapted to the element of flooding. It is a timbered, thatched-roofed house with a magnificent arcade supported by five posts, above which is a usable first floor. It was used as a granary and spare room during floods. The cottage used to be the centre of a large farm, which also included a cowshed, sheepfold, barn, stables, coach house and smithy. In the livestock building opposite the cottage, you can see the system of sloping ramps that once enabled animals to be brought into the attic during floods. Until the 19th century, the Vistula valley was famous for its ubiquitous orchards. They could be found not only on farms but also in alleys along country roads. Today, this tradition is being revived in Chrystkowo. By the Mennonite cottage, an orchard with old apple varieties, a drying room and a storage room for the fruit were established.
