Situated on nine hills, Chełmno is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Poland. Among the red brick monuments you can feel the unique atmosphere of the city located on the European Route of Brick Gothic. The history of the town is inseparably connected with the Teutonic Order, which granted Chełmno a location right, the so-called "Chełmno Privilege", calling it "the capital city". Until the 18th century, this document was the model for the foundation of over 200 cities, including Warsaw, Toruń and Gdańsk. Chełmno boasts Europe's longest surviving defensive walls, six Gothic churches and a Gothic-Renaissance town hall adorning the market square. Today it is the seat of the Museum of Chełmno Land, where you can learn not only about the interesting history of the town, but also about the world-famous Polish surgeon, Dr Ludwik Rydygier, who in 1880 performed the world's first gastric operation in his clinic in Chełmno. The relic of St. Valentine is kept in the parish church in Chełmno. It is thanks to it that Chełmno is called "the city of lovers".
