Granaries on the Brda River

Places

Information

The majestic silhouettes of three timber-framed granaries remind us of the crucial role river trade played in Bydgoszcz's life for centuries. Rising above the banks of the Brda River, these granaries were key facilities for servicing the port. The grain stored in them was reloaded onto barges and transported to Gdańsk. The three historic granaries were built between 1790 and 1803. There used to be two more beside them, but they were unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1960. Today, the three characteristic granaries are symbols of the city, and their image is featured in Bydgoszcz's logo. The historic interiors of these buildings have been adapted for the exhibition purposes of the Leon Wyczółkowski District Museum in Bydgoszcz. The permanent exhibition "From the Old Market to Freedom Square. A Walk through the Streets of Interwar Bydgoszcz" will reveal to you the historical heritage of the city on the Brda.
