Benedictine Abbey in Mogilno

Places

Information

On a small hill, by the shore of Lake Mogileńskie, there is a former Benedictine monastery complex, whose origins date back to 1050. The Church of St. John the Apostle, rebuilt many times over the centuries, retained the original form of a Romanesque basilica with elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque. The crypts located in its basement are a unique place. Covered with a groin vault, supported by one pillar, called the "abbot", the western crypt is one of the few of this type in Europe. The stone, raw altar in the eastern crypt is a testimony to the services held here for 800 years. The three monastery wings, together with the church wall, form a courtyard, in the center of which is the oldest well in Poland. Currently, the monastery is the Monastic House of the Capuchin Friars Minor and a unique place of respite for guests and pilgrims.
