Information

Perched on the hill of St. Adalbert (Wojciech), the complex of the former Norbertine nunnery attracts architecture lovers. This is where the most numerous and original complex of Romanesque sculpture in Poland is located. Basilica of St. Saint Trinity is a Romanesque building from the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Despite the Gothic and Baroque reconstruction, it has largely preserved its Romanesque building structure, and its interior houses many extremely valuable exhibits from various eras. Romanesque columns with the personification of human virtues and vices are among the most valuable monuments of Romanesque art in Poland. Although they are over 800 years old, no trace of them has been lost for over 200 years. During the Baroque reconstruction of the temple, they were built in the shape of rectangular pillars. They were discovered during renovation works in 1946. Similar columns can be found only in the Cathedral of St. James in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, and in the Cathedral of St. Mark in Venice, Italy. Among the numerous altars, pay attention to the reliquary altar of the Holy Cross. It contains 658 relics of saints, blesseds and martyrs, as well as the relic of the Holy Cross. In the central part of the altar you will find a 14th-century Gothic crucifix, mentioned as miraculous and famous for its graces. Rotunda of St. Saint Prokop is one of the oldest Romanesque temples and the largest Romanesque rotunda in Poland. The originality of its spatial layout and unique combination of shapes make it the only rotunda in Europe with a square-shaped presbytery. In its raw, stone interior you will find, among others: the original 12th-century stoup, the oldest Stations of the Cross in Poland from 1531, bas-reliefs from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries and an empty Romanesque tomb. Today, the former Norbertine monastery houses a museum - the Romanesque Cultural Center. Otto and Bolesław with the largest collections of Romanesque sculpture in Poland.
