Church of St. James was erected by the Teutonic Order as the parish church of the New Town of Toruń. It is distinguished by a basilica layout and a system of buttress arches, rarely used in Poland, typical of Gothic churches in Western Europe. Due to its unique structure, it is considered the most beautiful Gothic temple in Toruń. Built between 1309 and 1424, the church houses unique and precious mementos from the past. One of the most valuable works of art is a monumental, mystical crucifix showing Christ crucified on the Tree of Life, whose branches are entwined with sculptures of twelve Old Testament prophets. It is considered an outstanding work of Central European art of the Middle Ages. In front of the church you will see a special symbol - the sign of a shell. This means that the temple in Toruń is located on the pilgrimage route leading from the Baltic countries to the grave of Saint. James in Santiago de Compostela.
