Olęder cottage in Chrystków

Information

Chrystkowo, with its historic wooden cottage from the end of the 18th century, creates an extremely idyllic image of the village, recalling the times of Mennonites - Dutch settlers who, after persecution in their country, were forced to look for a new place outside its borders. The Mennonites, called Olenders, were known primarily for their skills in managing wetlands and floodplains. The cottage in Chrystków is one of the most valuable and last Olender objects in the Lower Vistula Valley. It is an example of architecture perfectly adapted to the elements of flooding. It is a wooden house with a thatched roof, with a magnificent arcade, topped by a usable first floor, formerly used as a granary and emergency room during floods.
