Złotoria is a village with medieval roots. A document from 1242 tells us that it belonged to the Diocese of Włocławek at that time. The ruins of a Gothic castle in the village are the remains of a stronghold built to protect the border with the Teutonic Knights' lands during the reign of King Casimir the Great in 1363. The castle was severely damaged during the war with the Teutonic Order in 1409-1411, and in Złotoria itself, the documents of the First Peace of Toruń, ending the aforementioned conflict, were exchanged. The castle was never rebuilt. Some of the bricks from the dilapidated and dismantled castle were used to build the tower of St. John's Church in Toruń. Its ruins were visited by Jan Matejko in 1877.
