Kowalewo Pomorskie is one of the oldest towns in the Chełmno Land. It was founded in the 13th century and was certainly known to Copernicus. Although we have no evidence that the future astronomer ever visited this place, medieval monuments remember his times. It was here, at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries, that the Teutonic Knights built a castle, which became the seat of the order's commander. When, in 1466, as a result of the Second Peace of Toruń, the town found itself within the borders of the Kingdom of Poland, the castle became the seat of Polish starosts. Today, only fragments of it remain. Another important monument in Kowalewo is the Gothic parish church of St. Nicholas, one of the oldest churches in the Chełmno Land. Fragments of 14th-century city walls with a tower have also survived from the Middle Ages.
